The Pap test or Pap smear, checks for abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix. This test allows early detection and treatment so that the abnormal cells DO NOT become cancer. There are many possible causes of an abnormal pap smear but the most common cause is infection with human papillomavirus (HPV).
If you were told that your pap smear was abnormal, then it is imperative that you contact your doctor and schedule a follow up appointment for further evaluation and treatment. An abnormal pap smear DOES NOT mean you have cervical cancer.
